The Faculty of Education at Yogyakarta State University will hold a Guest Lecture on the theme "Preparing Future Elementary School Teachers through Service-Learning and Global Citizenship Education" on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, at the Abdullah Sigit Hall. The event, which will take place from 08:00–12:00 WIB, will be attended by undergraduate students in Elementary School Teacher Education (PGSD), postgraduate students in Elementary Education, and doctoral students in Elementary Education.
In his remarks, the Dean of FIP UNY, Prof. Dr. Nurtanio Agus Purwanto, M.Pd., emphasised that this activity is expected to foster global awareness, social concern, and reflective skills in students so that they can become inspiring and characterful elementary school teachers. This aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 4: Quality Education, which emphasises the importance of inclusive and quality education access, and Goal 17: Partnerships for the Goals, through cross-country academic collaboration and capacity building for future educators. Thus, this activity not only contributes to improving the quality of education at the national level but also supports the achievement of the global sustainable development agenda.
The first session featured Obby Taufik Hidayat, S.Pd., M.Pd., Ph.D., from Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta, who presented the material "Concepts and Strategies for Cultural and Civic Literacy in Elementary Schools." This material emphasised the importance of cultural and civic literacy, which aligns with achieving SDG 4 (Quality Education) through inclusive and character-based learning, SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities) by fostering mutual respect and reducing discrimination, SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions) through instilling democratic values and social responsibility, and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) by integrating service-learning to strengthen partnerships between schools, communities, and educational institutions.
The second speaker, Dr. Mark Anthony D. Abenir from Ateneo de Manila University, presented a topic titled "Designing and Managing Service-Learning Projects to Support Basic Literacy and Community Development." This topic discussed how to design and manage service-learning projects that support the improvement of basic literacy and community development. The material is related to SDG 4 (Quality Education) through expanding access to inclusive literacy, SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities) by reaching marginalised groups, SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) through community empowerment, and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) through collaboration between universities, schools, families, and communities in sustainable development.
The event was a great success, moderated by Amalia Rizki Ardiansyah, S.Pd., M.Pd. Through this activity, students gained a deeper understanding of the concepts of Service-Learning and Global Citizenship Education as innovative approaches to preparing themselves to become competent, caring, and globally competitive elementary school teachers.
